It’s time for the 19th Annual Nordonia Hills Chamber of Commerce Community Expo – Saturday, March 26, 10 – 4:30, at Nordonia High School.  This experience is a bit like having a baby – it takes 9 months of hard work to see it all happen.  Each year I am amazed by the generosity of our local businesses – not just with their dollars, but with their time as well.  Chairperson Julie D’Aloiso works well into the night to make up for the daylight hours she spends away from her business SpiderCat Marketing. Brittny Shay (Grande Oaks &amp; Grande Pavilion), Dr. Jim Krystosik (Other Side of Medicine Health Center), and Alison Meredith (Williamsburg Townhomes) do quite a juggling act as well.  Expo Committee members Gary Jackson (Jackson Comfort Systems), Gary Miller (Gary Miller Productions), Ken Brooks (Bolinds Solutions Services Inc.), Mike Sims, Rich Purgert (ABC Rental Center East) and Rhonda  Solomon (No Time Cleaning) made time in their busy days to fulfill their Expo commitments – and all of this is voluntary, as in “unpaid”!  Cindy Batchelor (Western Reserve Printing), Scholarship Chairperson, is an integral part of the Expo experience and has accumulated a terrific assortment of raffle prizes to fund our Scholarships.  And it’s all thanks to these wonderful people who have worked tirelessly to make this event the biggest and best ever.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And it really is bigger and better!  We have more fun planned than ever before:  curling and hand grip challenges at the Duathlon/Pump N’ Run Booth, face painting in the cafeteria, grip strength tests, balance assessments, stretching demonstrations, BP, cholesterol and glucose screenings from UH Bedford Medical Center, a drawing for a LG 23” Flat Screen TV from Ridgway Insurance, Church of the Hills is having a drawing for a Kindle with 3G and Wi-Fi, free bowling passes form Roseland Lanes, discount coupons from Spennato’s, clowns and free Bibles from the United Methodist Church of Macedonia, muscle tension and stress scans from Crossroads Chiropractic – and so much more!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stop by the Nordonia Hills Duathlon and Pump N' Run booth and pre-register for the May 21st athletic event!!!  There will be a weight curling contest at the booth on the day of the EXPO.  Competitors will curl a percentage of their body weight for as many repetitions as possible and the top man and woman will be crowned.  There will also be several implements (IronMind Rolling Thunder, BLOB50, and Captains of Crush grippers) set up to test your grip strength. It might be time to set some guidelines for those "coffee shop workers".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff0000;"&gt;Don't spread out.&lt;/span&gt;  Keep your work contained to a &lt;strong&gt;small &lt;/strong&gt;table.  You don't need a table for 6 - leave that for diners.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff0000;"&gt;Buy something.&lt;/span&gt;  A good rule of thumb is to buy one coffee or snack every hour you're there.  Be a patron - not a squatter!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff0000;"&gt;Be quiet.&lt;/span&gt;  This is not the place for a long business call or loud conversations.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff0000;"&gt;Don't overstay.&lt;/span&gt;  Set a time limit.  I heard that in some Panera Bread facilities, they cut off the internet at a set time.  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff0000;"&gt;Meet one or two people only.&lt;/span&gt;  This is not free meeting space.  Unless everyone is eating a meal, make other arrangements.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff0000;"&gt;Tip!&lt;/span&gt;  It's not necessary to add to the tip jar, but if you spend a lot of time at a certain restaurant, it's a good idea to be nice to the people behind the counter.  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;More and more restaurants have WiFi now, so it might be good to share the tips above. But while everyone is devoting their attention to those means of communication, it's time for you to consider the other ways of contact that really bring success and impactful connections.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Be a voice mail nonconformist.&lt;/span&gt;  We've all played phone tag too many times, but just because we're connecting with a voice mailbox doesn't mean our message can't be meaningful.  My assistant kids me because from the back office, she can't tell if I'm talking to a person or leaving a message!  You should treat your messages just as you would an actual conversation.  Smile when you're speaking - it does comes over the phone.  Have lots of energy and enthusiasm when you call.  Say something unexpected to get the listener's attention and give them a reason to call back.  We all know this - but &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;don't forget to give your contact information.&lt;/span&gt;  How many messages are not returned simply because the caller never gave his name clearly or slowly stated the phone number?  Don't assume they know your voice or your number.  Leave it at the beginning &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;and&lt;/span&gt; end of the message.  I don't always have paper in front of me when I hear the message and sometimes the message is cut off before the number is given, so I appreciate the number being repeated.  You may need to practice your message before you call.  But if you get the desired result, it will be worth the extra time invested.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If we simply pay closer attention to the emails and phone calls that fill our days, we can create solid relationships with colleagues and clients alike.  &lt;/span&gt;People buy from those they know, like and trust.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;It’s all about customer-business trust.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;In the April issue of &lt;i style=""&gt;Smart Meetings&lt;/i&gt;, an article by Maribeth Kuzmeski caught my attention.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;In coming blogs, I’ll be sharing some of her tips to making quality lasting connections that will lead to solid relationships with colleagues and clients.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"&gt;We all feel more connected now – texting, cell phones, LinkedIn, Twitter Facebook, and “old-fashioned” email.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;2009 was the year of social media – putting information out at the speed of light.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;But 2010 is The Year of the Connector.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Let’s slow down and make all those connections meaningful, successful and impactful.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;b style=""&gt;Improve your social media skills.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Just like your face-to-face relationships, you need to be picky about your connections online.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Connect with people who have similar interest or who are working in your field.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;When someone you choose to connect with contacts you, you should always reciprocate; otherwise you’ll appear disinterested – which never leads to relationship building.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Whenever possible, try to take the cyber-connection to the next level.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Search for that person at conferences and networking events – somewhere outside of your computer screen!&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;More friends on Facebook and more tweets does not mean “it’s working”.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;It’s the quality that counts, not the quantity.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Slow down and make your connections more personal and meaningful to both of you.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; Apparently the "elevator speech" came from the early days of the Internet when web development companies needed venture capital.  There were so many companies looking for cash, that the ones with the simplest pitch won!  And some of that happened between floors in an elevator!!  Things have changed a bit since then.  We're ALL looking for cash, but probably won't find it in an elevator!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;But this little "verbal business card" CAN open doors for you!  The goal of your "speech" is to determine if the person you're talking to is interested in your business and if he is, you are asking for permission to start a conversation.   Project your passion, look for that hook that will engage the listener and focus on how you can benefit your listener.  Your "speech" won't land you the deal of the century, but it will provide the basis for a future relationship - and that relationship can lead to sales and contracts. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;There are wonderful sites out there that will help you perfect your speech. Even if you believe your speech is perfect, don't forget that you may need a few different approaches. We talked about phone etiquette, always showing up for appointments, calling if you’ll be late, working around the customer’s schedule, not yours.  Simple things really, but so easy to forget. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The competitive business market today requires all businesses to instill good customer service skills in their work force.  Without good customer service skills it becomes difficult to retain a regular and consistent customer base because the customers you do get will walk away dissatisfied.  The positive feedback from customers trickles through the entire social network of that customer.  If you need the refresher course – check out the following 8 reminders (thank you to SB Info Canada).  And if you have more, send them to me so I can share them with our readers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) Answer your phone.  Get call forwarding.  Or an answering service.  Hire staff if you need to.  But make sure that someone is picking up the phone when someone calls your business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) Don’t make promises unless you WILL keep them.  Reliability is one of the keys to any good relationship, and good customer service is no exception.  Think before you give any promise – because nothing annoys customers more than a broken one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3) Listen to your customers.  Can the sales pitches and the product babble.  Let your customer talk and show him that you are listening by making the appropriate responses, such as suggesting how to solve the problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4) Deal with complaints.  Give the complaint your attention, you may be able to please this one person this one time - and position your business to reap the benefits of good customer service.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5) Be helpful - even if there’s no immediate profit in it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6) Train your staff (if you have any) to be ALWAYS helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable.  Give every member of your staff enough information and power to make those small customer-pleasing decisions, so he never has to say, “I don’t know, but so-and-so will be back at...”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7) Take the extra step.  Whatever the extra step may be, if you want to provide good customer service, take it.  They may not say so to you, but people notice when people make an extra effort and will tell other people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8) Throw in something extra.  Whether it’s a coupon for a future discount, additional information on how to use the product, or a genuine smile, people love to get more than they thought they were getting&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you apply these eight simple rules consistently, your business will become known for its good customer service.  And the best part? I've often thought of us as a tree, with the trunk being the office, the branches are the different categories of membership and the leaves are the members. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;But what about a paper clip chain? That's a new "Chamber visual" for me. Actually, my chain isn't that neat row you're thinking of; it's more like the mess in my paper clip bowl. But they'&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;re all attached! Now think about it a moment. Think about all the connections you have, not just the one-to-one long chain, but all the paper clips that might be linked to you and the ones linked to the others. Think about the connectivity - the connections - you have out there: other Chamber members, online and face-to-face networking groups, your neighborhood, your church. &lt;em&gt;(Are you using them to your full capacity to benefit your business? Are you turning those connections into sales and increased business? No? We can talk about that later!)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;And think about the "connectivity" of our Chamber. Each of our 300+ members is a link in that paper clip chain. (And our members don't just come from Nordonia Hills; we have members from all over Northeast Ohio!) When a person inquires about a particular type of business, we refer only our members because they are vital to our chain. If we refer non-members, there is a "dis-connectivity" because we've broken the chain. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Our events are brimming with "connectivity". Our monthly meetings are driven by "connectivity" - as each of you stand to introduce yourself, you're becoming connected to everyone else in the room. At a ribbon cutting ceremony, you can connect with the movers and shakers in our community. On our event committees, every person will develop a relationship with others on the committee and will "connect" weekly or monthly. All our events and programs add to the chain. But the chain only continues and connects if you choose to be involved and use those connections.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;We are currently just over 300 members and as we gain new members, not only does the chain grow, but so do your connections. So I ask that you not only get involved with the chain, but also add to the chain. Ask the businesses with whom you do business if they belong to our Chamber. If not, send them our way.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Together we can make the chain continue to grow and offer more connections to you. There are many links to our community chain and our string of connected NHCOC clips only grows if you choose to be involved and stay connected.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;color:#006600;"&gt;Those are my thoughts. There are a million details – food, entertainment, decorations, raffles – the list goes on and on.  And then comes the inevitable questions that keep Stephanie and I awake at night – What if no one comes?  What if we don’t make enough money?  It’s enough to cross your eyes and turn your hair grey. (Hint – Blonde highlighting covers grey VERY well!)  And yet we continue to create events, ask for sponsorships, sell tickets and gather raffle prizes.  Why?  Because this is how we fund our operations to provide services and benefits to you, our Chamber members.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An organization such as ours is funded through a variety of means.  Annual membership investments account for less than 50% of our revenue.  The other 50% comes from events, revenue-sharing partnerships and products such as mailing labels, newsletter advertising and fees for the use of the bulk permit.  Each year, the budget is carefully assembled and goals are set for all revenue and expenses.  The challenge is always to ensure that we set our goals at the proper level so we can continue to offer the benefits and services you have come to expect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Occasionally, a member will challenge the fee for an event.  Or someone will look at me in disbelief when I explain that we can’t afford to have an event where we don’t make a profit.  Just as in your own business, we have to carefully manage every dollar to keep the doors open and the lights on.  Did you know that Administrative Expenses (payroll, taxes, rent, office supplies, insurance, etc.) account for almost 70% of our total expenses?  It would be easier to simply raise membership investments to cover that cost, but by doing that, the Chamber eliminates any added-value to your membership.  Event sponsorship allows for the opportunity to tailor-fit which event best showcases and promotes your business.  Without special events, your annual membership investment would be much higher just to cover the basics! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Nordonia Hills Chamber of Commerce exists to serve the interest of business in our community, whether it’s through benefits, educational programs or helping our members grow through marketing/networking activities.  Our committees are busier than ever and you’ll be reading about new programs developed to help make your business a success.  It takes money to develop and present new programs.  We hope that the next time you see an invitation to a Chamber event, you’ll see it as an opportunity to contribute to this ongoing process. Ask yourself what your goals are in participating in networking meetings so that you will pick groups that will help you get what you are looking for. Some meetings are based more on learning, making contacts, and/or volunteering rather than on strictly making business connections.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Visit as many groups as possible that spark your interest. Notice the tone and attitude of the group. Do the people sound supportive of one another? Does the leadership appear competent? Many groups will allow you to visit two times before joining.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Hold volunteer positions in organizations. This is a great way to stay visible and give back to groups that have helped you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Have a clear understanding of what you do and why, for whom, and what makes your doing it special or different from others doing the same thing. In order to get referrals, you must first have a clear understanding of what you do that you can easily articulate to others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given. When people give you referrals, your actions are a reflection on them. Respect and honor that and your referrals will grow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Call those you meet who may benefit from what you do and vice versa. Don’t say “May I help you?” or “How’re ya doing?” Everybody says that. For example: “Welcome! We’re providing new information on how rates are going to be changing because of new regulations.” Offer ideas and use open-ended questions that encourage more than just a one-word answer from your prospect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;o Don’t make them wait. Make sure you have enough staff to adequately handle your booth. You may have noticed that I have been scheduling events with both groups, making it easier for you, my members, to broaden your horizons – and your list of business contacts! Although each Chamber has a distinct – and very different – personality, all of us Directors agree that attendance at ALL events has been down. We labor over decisions to cancel events, to charge or not to charge admission, should we have a sponsor, will another email anger our members? Mostly – WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO GET PEOPLE TO ATTEND OUR EVENTS??????? We all feel that &lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;we are offering what you, our members, tell us you want &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;we are giving you the opportunities to make business contacts and develop relationships which will lead to more business &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;we are scheduling events where you are able to promote your business products and services &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;we are inviting speakers with expertise in areas that will help you run your business more profitably and efficiently&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;we are offering discounts on services and products that save you money AND promote other members. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;Yet, as our chambers grow in size, attendance decreases. So I need some answers! Do you have them? Here is what I want to know: &lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Which events are your favorites? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;What keeps you from attending? Time of day? Day of week? Cost? Facility? The specific event? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Do we have too many events? Do you feel that you must attend them all?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;What would you like your Chamber to do for you? What were your expectations when you joined? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;Let me know – please! The Chamber of Commerce IS its members. Don’t hang me yet! An “unfair advantage” isn’t lying, heating or stealing. It’s doing everything just a little bit better than your competition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even if you’re THE BEST at what you do, you know you need to do &lt;u&gt;everything&lt;/u&gt; just a bit better today than you did yesterday. That’s your “unfair advantage”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;The old saying goes – “If you build a better mouse trap, people will beat a path to your door.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is definitely not true in today’s competitive market. Unfortunately, having the best product or service does not automatically guarantee your success. Here are just some of the reasons why:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;People do business with people they know. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;People do business with the people who do business &lt;u&gt;with them&lt;/u&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;People do business with people their friends talk about. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;People do business with people they read about.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;Start today to develop your own “unfair advantage”. Try some of the following ideas and watch your client base grow.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;What one thing can you do better than your competition? How can you let the world know about your advantage? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;What one activity can you improve on? What one step towards that goal can you take this week? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;Are you collecting stories and testimonials from your satisfied clients&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;If the answer is “yes”, are you using them in your promotional materials, sales presentations, brochures, web site? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;Determine ways you can work on that first list – the one that proves how important networking and community involvement can be to your success. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;And here is the Chamber connection – if you don’t know how to get involved, give me a call.
